In the first part of the 20th century the “Halles de la buffa” used to be a very vivid focal point of the buffa district in Nice. At the beginning of the 21st century, this covered market was meant to become part of a bigger, ambitious building project which would include social housing, senior housings, residential ones as well as the covered market around a beautiful Art déco building.
In 2007 the city of Nice sold the area to a developer but it got slowly but surely degraded, while more and more merchants left.
Notwithstanding a building permit granted in 2012, the project has never been realized as the backer of the project declared bankrupt. The building permit was declared invalid
In May 2018 it seemed merchant city of La Buffa had been taken over by a group that would finally bring it back to life. The development work was supposed to start by mi-2019 and be finished one year later. In the meanwhile, the coronavirus had been there and yet fewer salesmen were still there, offering high-quality food to loyal clients in a ghostly atmosphere, insecure about their future.
By the beginning of 2022 the area has been by a real estate investment fund. The ambitious project has been reduced to a 4 stars hotel, a service residence for seniors and a parking. The covered market is for ever gone and the area is closed by two iron curtains, waiting for the building project in 2023…maybe
