A passage to Ladakh
In the now far 1987 I took a trip to Ladakh. At that time, Ladakh was an enclave from the state Jammu and Kashmir. Getting there by bus was a tiring bus journey going from Jammu to Srinagar and then to Leh, the capital of Ladakh. It pas also a way to progressive get used to the altitude. Jammu and Kashmir,a predominantly Muslim area and Ladakh, a predominantly Buddist area, had nothing in common culturally. The lack of cultural coherence between the 2 areas was striking. Thus the decision from the Indian government to dissociate Ladakh from Kashmir was cheered by Buddhist Ladakhi who suffered discrimination from the Muslim part of the population.
